Sometimes an hour is just not enough time to cover all of the materials we want to, so in this week's 99th installment we'll pick up where we left off with last week's show. Did you get some really cool swag for CHRISTmas? If so, SEND ME SOME PICS! LOL With this show, we bring 2010 to a close. May each and every one of you enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe New Year, and may 2011 off you more properity than you know how to handle. We'll be back in a week, or two, with our 100th episode! Woot!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

Sun, 19 December 2010
Hey, gang! I'm traveling today enroute to the grand state of Michigan to visit my family for CHRISTmas (wish me luck! LOL). Tim and I were, however, able to make some time to discuss some of the things that made 2010 a great year for us. There have been lots of great events; we've enjoyed many successes and accomplishments, and there have been too many new products hit the market this year to possibly cover (but we sure try!). We hope you enjoy this 98th installment. :) This will be my last opportunity to wish you all the best for this holiday season. I hope that you all remember the "reason" for the season, and may Santa bring you all of the goodies on your lists!

In this 97th installment, I interview the PhlatBoyZ one last time for 2010. Join us as we look at the evolution of their product line this year and try to peer just a bit into the future! You may notice that there's no Dorsal in this podcast. I am sorry to have to report that he's been stricken with some medical problems that prohibit him from doing the show. What a crummy time of the year to be down! Dennis, I'll be thinking some good thoughts for your speedy recovery, bud! Oopsie! Our show this week ran a little long and I totally forgot to mention an addendum to our "Dear Santa" list that we talked about last week! Our buddy and long-time listener, RCDude07, has a few really nice things on his CHRISTmas list... Dear Santa,

Well, the Holiday Season is upon us and, after our personal updates, Dennis, Tim, and I each share what's on our wishlists to Santa this year (as well as some listener lists, too). Additionally, you'll hear me talk about cutting MDF on my new Phlatty, you'll hear about some new feats in the full-scale aviation arena, and the RCadvisor will tell us about how we'll know when our design project goals have been fulfilled. LINKS: An Electric Home-built Takes Flight
Dear Santa, We hope you have had a great year this year and are ready for eating LOTS of milk and cookies during your trip around the world this CHRISTmas. I hope you're not working those elves too hard! Leo wants a brand new HK600GT helicopter to take his skills to the next level. Santa, would you happen to know a good, reasonably priced power system for one of these helis? Maybe your elves will know, huh. He would also enjoy someone putting in a local hobby shop in the St Augustine Florida area. Hance just wants some warmer weather so he can fly more, so if you should happen to bump into that Jack Frost character, could you ask him to lay off with the cold weather just abit? If not, he could prolly use some coal in his stocking to help him stay WARM! :) Dennis has been a really good boy this year and would really like an E-Flite Blade mSR to help him get into helicopter flying. Oh, and if it's not too much to ask, could he also get an FPV system? That would be so cool! Little Timmy has also been good and would LOVE to have a Radian Pro, an R/C Ultralight from like one of THESE or maybe even one of THESE , and maybe even a 108" Mud Duck from Mud Duck Aviation. Mikey has prolly not been the best he could be all year, but he'll certainly try harder next year (I promise!). In addition to one of everything those other guys have on THEIR list, I would really dig on getting a SlowBipe, a DIY Drones ArduPilot System, a Go Pro Hero HD camera system, and a Parrot by AR Drones! Oh, a Dubro EZ Bender would make a great stocking stuffer! Sincerely, Leo, Hance, Dennis, Tim, and Michael
PS - Oh yeah, I guess Peace On Earth would be an okay gift, too. PPS - Last time I saw you, you looked like you were losing weight. Looking good, Santa!

In our 95th installment, we discuss our friend's new Micro Yak and and then break off into some MultiRotor discussion (Yep, I've been bitten by the bug!). Also, the RCadvisor shares with us some great information on making aerodynamic struts and braces (both decorative and strengthening) for our larger projects. Next week, we will be talking about what we will be putting on our CHRISTmas lists to Santa this year, and you're invited to participate, too! Just drop me an email (crash.hancock AT gmail.com) and tell us what you'd like to get this year and we'll read the letters on next week's show. Some "technical difficulties" with the first recording lead to having to re-record this week's show. Nonetheless, I think you'll find some good information in this 92nd installment. We're back again this week with a little more talk about the Micro Airplane scene. After flying my new Ultra Micro 4-Site a bit, I am lovin' it! We also discuss E-Flite's latest announcement a bit - The UMX Extra 300! This little plane looks to be BIG on performance and it looks like E-Flite has another winner on it's hands. It's been two months since we've had a chance to visit with the PhlatBoyZ (Mark and Trish Carew) so what better time to get an update from them than right now when they're on the cusp of releasing their latest piece of CNC equipment - The PhlatPrinter MK3! Most of you guys that have been following the progress of this long-awaited jewel have a pretty good idea of what it will look like and the kind of things it will do, but in this 86th installment we get into some of the latest improvements to the electronics package and workflow that will be implemented in it. Believe it or not, (as if the PhlatBoyZ hadn't already made CNC easy enough) they are making it even EASIER for the rankest of beginners to learn how to use! LINKS: EZ-G540 for Gecko G540 Controllers

It's been a really tough week for me and this show stinks of it! LOL After some off-topic discussion, we talk about some HITS that I've found on the interwebs (some of which I have included on my Steals Of The Week), a MISS that I would be concerned about gambling money on, and a RANT that I've harbored for way too long. I apologize in advance if you find that this 85th installment is too far off the mark - even for me! LINKS:

No, we're not talking about the "X" planes project that was started in the '40's. In this 84th installment of TheCrashCast, we have the honor of visiting with Mr. James Karpy of Millennium RC - makers of the SSX and MicroSSX series of planes! Just like clock-work, we're back with an 80th installment this week, but alas, it's just been so stinkin' hot that we just don't have a lot of RC talk this week. If you know us, though, you'll know that both Dorsal and I are really into CNC machines to support our respective RC 'habits'. I spent some significant time in the workshop on a mission to discover more about these great machines and how they operate. Tune in as we explain the "Right-Hand Rule", as well as how I suggest that the PhlatScript might be improved for use with the upcoming PhlatPrinter MK3 machine and other such Overhead-Gantry systems. We also have some other stuff, including a visit from the RCadvisor and also some great pictures of a listener's completed e-QSC! Have you completed your e-QSC from this summer's Scratch-build Club? Lots of fun stuff in this 78th installment! Dorsal won a Millennium RC Micro SSX from RCRN, I've got a mess of Mercury Adhesives to try out, and the PhlatBoyZ are GIVING away a PhlatPrinter MK3 kit! Also, I talk at length (don't I always? LOL) about some options for club Pylon Racing, including the Slipso 400 that I am currently building. On another note, if you are building your e-QSC from our Scratch-building Club, be sure you send me pics of your finished plane by August 15th so we can enter you in to our little giveaway of the motor and esc combo! This week we get to catch up with the PhlatBoyZ, Mark and Trish Carew, to learn of the progress on the latest PhlatPrinter design, the MK3. This new machine is getting very close in transition from prototype to final product, and the list of features is mind-boggling! A few things contributed to the name of this 76th show, but you'll have to give it a listen to understand the primary reason... The e-QSC project finally comes to a close this week with a total of thirteen videos shot and uploaded to YouTube, including the maiden flight of the low-winged 'sport' version. Have you been building along with me? If so, submit photos of your finished project to me (via email) by no later than August 15th, 2010. I'll post all photos received to AllThingsCrash so that our listeners can view them and vote for their favorite. If your plane is chosen as "Listener's Choice", I'll send you a motor and ESC (the ones I specified for use on this plane) for your next project! We learn that Shaun, a capable 3D pilot as well as apt RC Aircraft designer, has created a website for the sole purpose of sharing his wares with the world! Wed, 9 June 2010
Hey gang! This is just a quick note to let you know that I will be taking a 1 week break from the Scratch-Build of the e-QSC. The reason? I am heading out of town enroute to Slater, MO for SPADFest 2010! Before I leave, however, I am planning on starting an official Build Log over at RCG to cover this project. I have been working diligently to build a second plane so I can shoot all the necessary photos for the RCG thread, and I have just about finished the wing portion of the build so that the thread will be caught up to the videos. Whew! This is a LOT of work! LOL The next podcast, if all goes as planned, will be detailed coverage of SPADFest. I'm probably not going to have enough time to get some "plastic" ready to fly, but will have cameras and notebook in hand to give this cool event the coverage it so deserves. Remember, it was the SPADders that actually first taught us that materials other than balsa could be used to contruct our planes! So, get those e-QSC wings built, but try to refrain from starting your fuselage just yet, since I have some neat things to show you on this - you won't be building over the plans for this part! Thanks for your understanding... Category:general

It's been a busy week in the workshop! LOL Please join us this week for some information on a couple of upcoming events and news on some new products now available. Our buddy, the RCadvisor (Carlos), is backagain this week to discuss the potential use of Carbon in place of balsa parts, too. The meat of this week's broadcast? Well, the Scratch-building Club has officially started! This week, we build the wing for the e-QSC! The total PDF Plans and Templates package is available on my site, and the first four video tutorials to help you along are on YouTube (links below). Additionally, I have created a new "Listener's Stuff" section to the support site (AllThingsCrash.com) so that I have a place to show off the photos of the cool stuff you guys send in to me! In this 71st installment, we discuss Dorsal's progress and newest acquisitions, a cool site I found (cardboard? REALLY?), Larry's Blue Foam Wonder (as featured in Park Pilot magazine!), the RCadvisor talks a bit about scaling down airplanes, and I offer up a couple more great suppliers of balsa kits (for Corey from last week's show). As well, the cat is out of the bag! I've been kicking around the concept of online tutorials to help more people discover the magic that is balsa, but Fred (a very talented balsa builder) lit the fire beneath me so we're off. It's gonna be a great summer!! LINKS: Oh, and before I forget, here's your shopping list! It's great for strengthening! Buying the sizes I've shown above, you'll have some scrap left over. I actually used quite a few 3" wide planks, but rather than make the list too confusing, I've just shown 4" stock. It's better to have some left over for another project than to be short and have to postpone your building session! In our 70th show, we dip into the ol' mailbag and share some listener emails. We talk a bit about engine tuning, some "real" kit suggestions, and some Desktop CNC options. Also, Carlos tells us about some things to consider when doubling the size of a model. Oh, and is there a hint in the air of something new and cool on the horizon? Hmmm.... LINKS: |

Woohoo! Since I managed to screw up the the podcast recording of our live session in Toledo, I was at least able to extract the audio from the video-feed that we put up on UStream (see the previous blog post for the link to that). Without a doubt, you would probably be better served by going over to Ustream and watching the video webcast - it will most likely make more sense seeing and hearing us, rather than just hearing us. Nonetheless, this installment now makes iTunes as an official show... Please excuse our "goofiness" - it was a LOOONG show and by the time we got to sit down and record this, we were all so mentally and physically "spent" that we were really out of it (no, no alcohol was involved in the taping of this segment! LOL). Regardless of the content and sound quality, we sure did have fun! With any luck at all, next week's show will contain much better information, so be sure to check us out! Links:

Boy, have we been BUSY!! As of right now, there is no MP3 available for this week's 64th installment that was recorded LIVE from the Park Inn (near the SeaGate Center) where the Toledo show is held annually. I did, however, remember this year to press the RECORD button for the video stream, so if click the following link you will be taken to my UStream page where you can see the show. I am hoping that when I get home I'll be able to extract the audio from this video and edit it in to a podcast episode "properly" so that you can still snag it in iTunes. Please excuse my goofiness, and no, no alcohol was involved in the making of this show (though it would have probably been better to lead you to believe there was! LOL).

Much Ado About Nothing - not as in Shakespeare's romantic comedy, but instead like, unfortunately, not a lot to report from the RC front. In this 62nd installment we yammer on about various things on the upcoming Toledo Weak Signals RC Show. Speaking of that, we are also looking at doing a video webcast LIVE from Toledo (not from the floor - more like from the hotel room after Saturday evening flying, like we did last year). If you guys are interested in seeing us all (me, Dennis, the PhlatBoyZ, and anyone else we can get) and hearing that week's show live, then go to AllThingsCrash to vote! If we get enough interest, we'll do it!

Well, I braved the cold, the heavy winds, and the torrential downpour to make my way north to the Weatherford Aero Modeling Society's annual Swap Meet and Auction! I was able to resist blowing my life's savings on all the goodies I found there and only made a meager little $20 purchase. Something that this club has added to this event since my last visit are informative lectures given by key people in the RC Industry. In addition to renewing some old friendships at this huge event, I was also able to form another one with my acquaintence of Rick Cummins, owner of C&M Solutions Hobby AND one of the newest PhlatClub members (my first meeting with a fellow Texas PhlatPrinter enthusiast!)! I'm doing a solo act this week, so hang on - I'm all over the board on this one! After some rather strange weather this week kept me from getting my flying fix on, I decided to get started on a build I've been wanting to do for quite some time. In this 58th installment we discuss that weather, that build, an upcoming event in Virginia, and in addition to all of that cool stuff, Carlos is back with another Ask The RCadvisor segment containing some info on KF Airfoils!

Join us in this 57th installment where we visit with PhlatBoyZ, Mark and Trish, and learn of all the cool things they've been up to during the last month. There's talk of JeepOplanes and Hover-Hoppers, the PhlatFormer Vacuum Forming Machine, and perhaps a way to obtain fully built and tested PhlatPrinters for those that just don't want to take on a machine build! Oh, and one more thing - a new PhlatScript will be released very soon and it has more great features! This workflow is not just for PhlatPrinters anymore! We'll be back next week with another Ask The RCadvisor segment, so keep those questions coming!

In this 56th installment, we talk about the new Spektrum 10 channel radio that will most likely not be seen in the USA (although I really like it's form factor), some Balsa kits that you can use with that PZ Brick or AR6400, as well as the new XtremeFoamies Sentinel that I just finished and maidened. We also get a visit from the RCadvisor, as well as discuss the best place to get mounts for your motor with an 8mm bearing tube.

This week we're honored to have an old friend back in the workshop with us - Mr. Carlos Reyes from RCAdvisor.com. Carlos spent the Fall of 2009 working on a very interesting project. You'll want to give this show a listen to get a glimpse into what kinds of considerations are made when designing aircraft for a specific purpose like UAV! Also, Carlos teases us a bit regarding some upcoming projects in his backlog. Do I smell another book? Hmmm...

Hey gang, we're back! After a peaceful 2 week break (actually, I've been ill and trying to get my voice back for the last 2 weeks! LOL), we get a chance to visit with the PhlatBoyZ to find out what all they've been up to as well as see what their plans are for this new year.
I added an interesting goody in the Steals Of The Week section over at AllThingsCrash, as well as an article on 4 Axis Hot-Wire CNC Machines that so many of our listeners have been asking about, so pop over and check this stuff out! I am so sorry, folks, but yours truly here is still down with this terrible upper respiratory infection which renders me somewhat unable to put out this week's installment of TheCrashCast. The good news is that I'm starting to get my voice back. The bad news is that I can't talk for 30 seconds without breaking out into an awful coughing fit. Thanks for your understanding!
We'll be back next week with this year's first installment. You'll want to tune in because we're slated to have the PhlatBoyZ back on to talk about their 2010 goals and I'm certain we'll hear all about that new commercial CNC machine they've just installed at PhlatBoyZ HQ! Category:general
