Well, pretty much all we have to report this week is news from around the RC world. I got some brief flights this week on a favorite, but not much building on anything for me lately. You're still going to want to lend an ear to this 148th installment of our show since we have some fairly interesting things to share. Also, the RCadvisor is back this week with the first part of a two-part series explaning "Pitch Sensitivity". LINKS: HeadsUpRC Selling SlowBipes (Be watching! In this 147th installment of our little show, we talk about some very cool videos, some friend's websites, some new technology, some SEFF news, and we even answer a listener's question about one of my build techniques. With all of that, we still managed to squeeze in another great "Ask The RCadviser" segment where Carlos explains some common builder mistakes. This week, two more videos have been posted for our Mini Intern Build-Along series, so if you're building along with me, grab your kit and get started on that fuselage! Well, how about that? Another year has just about escaped us! In this 145th installment, we review all of the fun we've had this year, as well as reveal some of our shortcomings (well, Crash, anyway. LoL). This week we have a neat surprise from the RCadvisor, and then we share our CHRISTmas Wishlists along with letters to Santa from Colin, Tony, and Gary. Oh, and one last thing: please check out Tim's plane pictures on our Facebook Fan Page and see if you can help Tim identify two of his recent aircraft acquisitions. LINKS: Our Facebook Fan Page (remember to Like us and upload a pic!) Hey Santa! Gary B. has been a good boy all year and really wants a Super Skybolt, a T-133, a Blade mCPx, a UMX Beast with AS3X, and some uninterrupted shop time, if you please. Colin B. has also been very good and would like a few things, too. He's been jonesing for some Rokenbok (Oh, I've got to get some of these!!) goodies, a Losi Micro HighRoller or Short Course Truck, a Mountain Models EZ Sport, a nice Pin Vise, a Prop Balancing Stand, a Lipo Sack, and maybe some help with some shop renovations. Tony O. has only a simple wish this year, Santa. He just wants to have a look at your list of all the girls that made your Naughty List. ;) Little Timmy would really like to have a new airplane kit that's kind of retro - something like the Cleveland PlayBoy Senior. Santa, I hafta to say, I'm not really sure Timmy has been that good this year. Something about too much jar, whatever that means. Ron really needs something extra special for all the hard work he's done this year. He's really been wanting something like a TroyBuiltModels 30cc SBach with all of the trimmin's to go with it. Of course, he can always use some stocking stuffers like batteries and servos and such. Crash has been the best this year! He'd like a 108" Mud Duck kit, a RadicalRC 66" Intern, a UMX Beast AS3X, and one of those PhlatBoyZ HBot Pro 3D Printers when they become available! TheCrashCast will be going "dark" for the next two weeks, but we will be back the week of January 8th. Until then, we wish you all a Merry CHRISTmas, and a safe and prosperous New Year! |

In this 144th installment of our show, we take you through a simple exercise to find an optimal power system for the Electrifly Cosmic Wind ARF. I am looking forward to getting this airplane in the air, as it looks like it may be quite fast! We also share some cool things found on the web, as well as clue you in on how you can WIN a Mini Intern Kit from our friends over at RadicalRC. Remember, next week is our End-Of-Year, CHRISTmas show, so if you have a CHRISTmas Wishlist that you would like us to share on that show, email it to me at the address given during the lead-out at the end of each show. LINKS: Recommended Power for the Cosmic Wind RadicalRC (sponsor of our Mini Intern GiveAway) You can enter for your chance to win the RadicalRC Mini Intern airplane kit (like what we are building in our soon-to-be-released 3rd Build-Along Series) by simply 'liking' our Facebook Fan Page and uploading a picture of you with your favorite RC Model(s)! One lucky entrant will be selected at random around the end of January 2012 and will win the kit offered up by our friends at RadicalRC. No purchase of any kind is necessary, and only one entry per person is allowed. Good luck!! |

As 2011 starts winding down to a close, we finally get a chance to catch up with our buddies (Mark and Trish Carew) over at PhlatBoyZ HQ in this 143rd installment of our show. They've had quite a busy year this year and yet they just keep plugging away on new manufacturing solutions that we can all look forward to! During this 142nd installment of the show, you'll learn all about Ironing Boards and how they may pertain to our hobby (kinda cool, really). Ron shares some flying he got in during the last week; Tim tells us what he's been able to accomplish with his Mud Duck, and I make excuses as to why I've not really accomplished much of anything. LoL Oh, and our RCadvisor pops in to answer questions about servo and receiver compatabilities. As we prepare to embark on our 3rd Build-Along (Radical RC's Mini Intern Kit), I discuss some considerations and preparation for building a kit. Strange title, right? I think it's aptly named though, as I currently appear to be stricken with some sort of flu-like bug, and the entire recording of our 141st show saw me swinging from the chills to just absolutely burning up! LoL But hey, without a little sickness now and then, how can we possibly appreciate good health? I apologize for being late getting this installment posted. :) We've got some great news items this week, and we also answer some listener emails. We covered quite a bit of ground again in this 118th installment, but perhaps the biggest news is the release of the files for the new QSC QuadCopter, so if you've been holding off on starting your own multi-rotor project because you wanted an inexpensive Quad instead of the TriCopter we did, now is the time to get started! The other big news item we deliver this week is that you can now order your bare, v2.1 QSC Interconnect Board so that you can build your own FSS. So many of you have been asking for this (since the minimum board order through ExpressPCB is 3 boards), and now we are ready to take care of you. This is how it works: PayPal the money to me ($35/board USD) using the email address I provide in this show and tell me which bare board that you want (Arduino Pro Mini-based or ATmega 328-based). I will place the group order on Monday, May 23rd, 2011. As soon as I receive the boards here (7-10 working days from date of order), I will put them in a padded envelope and send them out to you within two days via regular post. Remember, the ATmega 328 board will require you to flash the chip, but if you don't have that ability, we can do it for you (just email me and we'll work it out). Also, we hope to publish the build instructions for the ATmega 328 board, along with the shopping list, very soon. Everything you need to know about the Pro Mini-based board is already on my site. Please remember, these are bare boards only. You have to buy all of the goodies for them and populate them yourself. We are safe and sound now in our respective homes, but our minds are still reeling from this incredible event, so please indulge us as we cover the events of the last day, including SEFF Night Bowling and significant adult beverages. Our 114th installment has all three of your hosts together for the first time. We all piled into Bob's camper, fired up the ol' laptop, and attempted to give you our impression of SEFF live from Hodges Field (well, it was live when we recorded it LoL). If you listen carefully, you may hear the generator running in the background, as well as the occasional Ritewing fly-by, as my noise filter just couldn't get it all. |

Well, gang, we are headed to SEFF this weekend! We didn't want to leave you without your podcast "fix" this week though, so we got together for a brief recording. Our 113th show is a short one, and there's no Ask The RCadvisor segment this week, but we hope to make up for this week's shortcomings with next week's show. Also, I am planning to make an effort to share lots of pictures from this event through my Twitter account (provided there is sufficient cellular coverage), so be watching! LINKS:

It's been a busy week for all three of your hosts as we are preparing for our week of fun in Georgia. Nonetheless, we get together for this 112th installment of the show to talk about some new offerings that have popped up (some are just totally unbelievable! LoL) and a conversion that Ron has been considering. Additionally, the RCadvisor is back this week to discuss another publication that may help you understand these models we fly. For our 111th installment, this week it's just me, but I have a guest in the workshop! My friend John joins me and we discuss our custom Wii MultiCopter Interconnect board. As you probably know, this board goes far to tame the wiring mess that is inherent in the Flight Stabilization System for our Multi-Rotor projects, and we've already shared the necessary files so that you can order them yourselves. However, if you do not want to order the minimum order of three boards from the manufacturer, we will start coordinating group orders this week so you can order less than three - be watching for the article to pop up on AllThingsCrash this week with instructions on how you can get in on this! Albeit a bit somber, I take an opportunity to say goodbye to my dear friend Dennis who lost his fight with Cancer last week. If you would like to send a card or letter to his wife Anne, please email me and I'll provide her address. You can also share your kind thoughts on the Online Memory Book, as I am certain that the family would find it uplifting to hear from all of Dennis' online friends. I am certain that many of you have been wondering about my friend and co-host of two years. I shared on the show that Dennis had been having some medical issues and had to step away from the microphone, but the truth is, he has been sparring with cancer for the last three months. Unfortunately, Dennis lost that battle and succumbed to the disease yesterday. Anne, his loving wife, phoned me today to share the news and she advised that he went peacefully, which is all that each of us can hope for when our numbers are up. If you would like to send a card, or letter, or whatever expressing your kind thoughts to Anne and the rest of the family, please email me and I'll give you the mailing address.
Dennis, I know you've gone on to a better flying site, my friend. You will be missed, but never forgotten!

So this week, it's just me and Ron in the workshop for episode #110. We do a little reminiscing and discuss bearing replacement in nitro motors and give a status update on the QSC TriCopter project. Wow! This year's Scratch-Build Club project has turned into more work than last year's design! LOL Bear with us, though - we're almost done! LINKS: DIY Hand-Wired Flight Stabilization System Free Files! (use these to order the Wii MultiCopter Interconnect boards that we use) Join us next week, as we are expecting to have the information ready so that you can order your board kits directly from us so you can avoid that "bird's nest" of wires! Also, be watching AllThingsCrash this week for the setup and configuration information for the FSS. |

In our 109th installment of the show, we talk a bit about electric power systems, especially how they apply to designs like our QSC TriCopter that we are building for this years Scratch-Build Club project. We actually have two systems that John and I have tried and we like them both. Also, the RCadviser discusses issues that are the real root cause to crashes. Last year we kicked off Crash's Scratch-Build Club with a design of my own, the eQSC. The project was aimed at helping first-time builders successfully build a great flying model via easy-to-follow instructional videos, plans, and templates. This year, we're making this an annual event by jumping in on the Multi-Rotor craze with comprehensive resource materials (plans, templates, documents, and videos) so that ANYONE can build their own Quick, Simple, and Cheap TriCopter! We're going to kick it off this week in our 108th installment by talking all about the airframe! Also in the episode, the RCadvisor gives us the low-down on Lipo safety and, of course, we talk about a bunch of other stuff. :) Stuff we talked about: Inexpensive X-acto Blades (Thanks, Randy!) Send Your Letters To Congress! Great e-QSC Landing Gear (Yep, people are STILL building last years' project plane!) National Balsa (Great prices on the plywood and sticks we'll use onn the Tri) HobbyPartz (I LOVE the ExceedRC Alpha Motors!) Quanum Telemetry System (Currently on backorder, but I've got MY order in!) FancyFoam Going Out Of Business :( If you are diggin' on TriCopters and you plan to build along with us, following is a Bill Of Materials you'll need to gather for this weeks' segment: QSC TriCopter Airframe: Two: 12" x 24" x 1/8" Light Ply or Birch Ply One: 3/4" square, 48" long dowel (or Two 36" lengths) Six: 4-40 screws 1 - 1 1/4" long Six: Blind Nuts (preferrable) or locking nuts Six: 4-40 sized washers (or Twelve if you use the locking nuts instead of blind nuts) One: 4 1/2" - 4 3/4" x 1/4" diameter rod (aluminum or music wire) One: 1/4" I.D. Wheel Collar Three: Nylon Washers, 1/4" I.D. Two: Nylon Shoulder Bushings, 1/4" I.D. I am planning to have the templates, instructions, and videos up for the airframe build in the next day, or three. Keep checking AllThingsCrash.com, as that's where all the dope will be!

A guest in the workshop? Youbetcha! In this 107th show we get to talk with Greg Drusjack, owner of Mud Duck Aviation. If you've been in the hobby for any real length of time, then you no doubt know all about the iconic "Ducks" that were designed by Tom Chipley. Over the years, the Mud Ducks have been described as "beautiful", "so ugly they're beautiful", "just down-right goofy", and even "what the Heck!". Whatever you may think of them personally, though, you'll agree that they are a must-have staple for any hangar. Don't believe me? Just build one and take it to your local field and see if you can find ANYONE without a smile on their face when they see it. In this 106th release of our show, Tim and I continue on with our discussion from last week regarding "Unconventional Tools". Also, the RCadvisor tells us about using Expo in our radios for the throttle channel (something I honestly never thought of doing, but will certainly check out!), and we have a special guest in the workshop to talk with us about an inexpensive flight stabilization system for our multi-rotor designs. In this week's installment we'll share some pictures and videos sent in from some of our listeners, and then discuss some tools we use that were not necessarily manufactured with the purpose of RC in mind. This week we discuss perhaps the hottest product announcement this quarter - the release of a new flavor of Spektrum's DSM technology. Was it the "J" standard like what Futaba has with their FASST system that I predicted quite some time ago? It doesn't look like it. Spektrum continues the love with their release of the new DX10T transmitter with a form factor reminiscent of what the folks in Europe have enjoyed for many years. In addition to these discussions, we'll talk about some listener emails, the BluWing Tim is getting at SEFF, and the RCadvisor discusses the use of digital servos with FM transmitters. In our 103rd show we delve into a couple of product reviews! After sharing a couple of listener emails, we'll tell you all about Ron's new Hyperion Sniper and my SlowBipe that I've been trying to spotlight for a couple of weeks now. Also, there's a pretty thorough update on my TriCopter project, and the RCadvisor is back again this week for some continued discussion on finding an optimal Center Of Gravity (CG) for your plane. As well, the RCadvisor is back with another informative segment, too! LINKS:

We are smack in the middle of building season here in the states, so it seems as good a time as any to have our annual safety discussion to help our new pilots (and perhaps even some seasoned ones) to stay safe while enjoying this great sport. In this 101st installment we'll discuss safety in the workshop, safety while transporting your toys, and even some safety at your flying site. Interesting title for a podcast, huh? It's the name of a children's song my kids like on the XM Kids channel on satellite radio, and I found it fit this week's show. This show starts the THIRD year of this podcast; this is our 100th installment (i.e., TRIPLE digits); this week we add a new THIRD person to our team. See what I mean? LOL If you've heard this song before, congratulations - you are now singing it in YOUR head. Happy New Year! In this show we'll introduce my buddy Ron, we'll discuss the loot we got for CHRISTmas recently, we'll get another Ask The RCadvisor segment in, and we'll talk a bit about our resolutions for this year. Sometimes an hour is just not enough time to cover all of the materials we want to, so in this week's 99th installment we'll pick up where we left off with last week's show. Did you get some really cool swag for CHRISTmas? If so, SEND ME SOME PICS! LOL With this show, we bring 2010 to a close. May each and every one of you enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe New Year, and may 2011 off you more properity than you know how to handle. We'll be back in a week, or two, with our 100th episode! Woot!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

Sun, 19 December 2010
Hey, gang! I'm traveling today enroute to the grand state of Michigan to visit my family for CHRISTmas (wish me luck! LOL). Tim and I were, however, able to make some time to discuss some of the things that made 2010 a great year for us. There have been lots of great events; we've enjoyed many successes and accomplishments, and there have been too many new products hit the market this year to possibly cover (but we sure try!). We hope you enjoy this 98th installment. :) This will be my last opportunity to wish you all the best for this holiday season. I hope that you all remember the "reason" for the season, and may Santa bring you all of the goodies on your lists!

In this 97th installment, I interview the PhlatBoyZ one last time for 2010. Join us as we look at the evolution of their product line this year and try to peer just a bit into the future! You may notice that there's no Dorsal in this podcast. I am sorry to have to report that he's been stricken with some medical problems that prohibit him from doing the show. Oopsie! Our show this week ran a little long and I totally forgot to mention an addendum to our "Dear Santa" list that we talked about last week! Our buddy and long-time listener, RCDude07, has a few really nice things on his CHRISTmas list... Dear Santa,

Mon, 6 December 2010
Well, the Holiday Season is upon us and, after our personal updates, Dennis, Tim, and I each share what's on our wishlists to Santa this year (as well as some listener lists, too). Additionally, you'll hear me talk about cutting MDF on my new Phlatty, you'll hear about some new feats in the full-scale aviation arena, and the RCadvisor will tell us about how we'll know when our design project goals have been fulfilled. LINKS: An Electric Home-built Takes Flight
Dear Santa, We hope you have had a great year this year and are ready for eating LOTS of milk and cookies during your trip around the world this CHRISTmas. I hope you're not working those elves too hard! Leo wants a brand new HK600GT helicopter to take his skills to the next level. Santa, would you happen to know a good, reasonably priced power system for one of these helis? Maybe your elves will know, huh. He would also enjoy someone putting in a local hobby shop in the St Augustine Florida area. Hance just wants some warmer weather so he can fly more, so if you should happen to bump into that Jack Frost character, could you ask him to lay off with the cold weather just abit? If not, he could prolly use some coal in his stocking to help him stay WARM! :) Dennis has been a really good boy this year and would really like an E-Flite Blade mSR to help him get into helicopter flying. Oh, and if it's not too much to ask, could he also get an FPV system? That would be so cool! Little Timmy has also been good and would LOVE to have a Radian Pro, an R/C Ultralight from like one of THESE or maybe even one of THESE , and maybe even a 108" Mud Duck from Mud Duck Aviation. Mikey has prolly not been the best he could be all year, but he'll certainly try harder next year (I promise!). In addition to one of everything those other guys have on THEIR list, I would really dig on getting a SlowBipe, a DIY Drones ArduPilot System, a Go Pro Hero HD camera system, and a Parrot by AR Drones! Oh, a Dubro EZ Bender would make a great stocking stuffer! Sincerely, Leo, Hance, Dennis, Tim, and Michael
PS - Oh yeah, I guess Peace On Earth would be an okay gift, too. PPS - Last time I saw you, you looked like you were losing weight. Looking good, Santa!

In our 95th installment, we discuss our friend's new Micro Yak and and then break off into some MultiRotor discussion (Yep, I've been bitten by the bug!). Also, the RCadvisor shares with us some great information on making aerodynamic struts and braces (both decorative and strengthening) for our larger projects. Next week, we will be talking about what we will be putting on our CHRISTmas lists to Santa this year, and you're invited to participate, too! Just drop me an email (crash.hancock AT gmail.com) and tell us what you'd like to get this year and we'll read the letters on next week's show. It's been two months since we've had a chance to visit with the PhlatBoyZ (Mark and Trish Carew) so what better time to get an update from them than right now when they're on the cusp of releasing their latest piece of CNC equipment - The PhlatPrinter MK3! Most of you guys that have been following the progress of this long-awaited jewel have a pretty good idea of what it will look like and the kind of things it will do, but in this 86th installment we get into some of the latest improvements to the electronics package and workflow that will be implemented in it. Just like clock-work, we're back with an 80th installment this week, but alas, it's just been so stinkin' hot that we just don't have a lot of RC talk this week. If you know us, though, you'll know that both Dorsal and I are really into CNC machines to support our respective RC 'habits'. Tune in as we explain the "Right-Hand Rule", as well as how I suggest that the PhlatScript might be improved for use with the upcoming PhlatPrinter MK3 machine and other such Overhead-Gantry systems. This new machine is getting very close in transition from prototype to final product, and the list of features is mind-boggling! Just when you think that the PhlatBoyZ concept of "Quality CNC for the average Joe" can't get any better, IT DOES! LINKS: |

A few things contributed to the name of this 76th show, but you'll have to give it a listen to understand the primary reason... The e-QSC project finally comes to a close this week with a total of thirteen videos shot and uploaded to YouTube, including the maiden flight of the low-winged 'sport' version. Have you been building along with me? If so, submit photos of your finished project to me (via email) by no later than August 15th, 2010. I'll post all photos received to AllThingsCrash so that our listeners can view them and vote for their favorite. If your plane is chosen as "Listener's Choice", I'll send you a motor and ESC (the ones I specified for use on this plane) for your next project! Remember, if you should have a question that's not adequately answered on the PDFS or in the videos, don't hesitate to email me. Due to plans with family and friends this weekend, I've decided to cancel this week's show. No worries, though - we'll be back next week with our normal RC chatter.

In this 75th installment (75 already??), after we get a few little news items out of the way, we get to hang out a bit with fellow PhlatClub member Shaun "3Dmon" Frank. We learn that Shaun, a capable 3D pilot as well as apt RC Aircraft designer, has created a website for the sole purpose of sharing his wares with the world! Additionally, I've uploaded videos #9 and #10 of the e-QSC build where I cover some pushrods information, mounting the wing to the fuselage, and building and mounting the empennage. What a busy week it's been! In this 73rd installment, I'll tell you about it, as well as a cool event I attended. Next week we'll get back with the RCadvisor and the e-QSC build, but in the mean time I hope you enjoy my tales and these cool links:

Hey gang! This is just a quick note to let you know that I will be taking a 1 week break from the Scratch-Build of the e-QSC. The reason? I am heading out of town enroute to Slater, MO for SPADFest 2010! Before I leave, however, I am planning on starting an official Build Log over at RCG to cover this project. I have been working diligently to build a second plane so I can shoot all the necessary photos for the RCG thread, and I have just about finished the wing portion of the build so that the thread will be caught up to the videos. Whew! This is a LOT of work! LOL The next podcast, if all goes as planned, will be detailed coverage of SPADFest. I'm probably not going to have enough time to get some "plastic" ready to fly, but will have cameras and notebook in hand to give this cool event the coverage it so deserves. Remember, it was the SPADders that actually first taught us that materials other than balsa could be used to contruct our planes! So, get those e-QSC wings built, but try to refrain from starting your fuselage just yet, since I have some neat things to show you on this - you won't be building over the plans for this part! Thanks for your understanding... Category:general

It's been a busy week in the workshop! LOL Please join us this week for some information on a couple of upcoming events and news on some new products now available. Our buddy, the RCadvisor (Carlos), is backagain this week to discuss the potential use of Carbon in place of balsa parts, too. The meat of this week's broadcast? Well, the Scratch-building Club has officially started! This week, we build the wing for the e-QSC! The total PDF Plans and Templates package is available on my site, and the first four video tutorials to help you along are on YouTube (links below). Additionally, I have created a new "Listener's Stuff" section to the support site (AllThingsCrash.com) so that I have a place to show off the photos of the cool stuff you guys send in to me! If you've got an interesting build you want to share with everyone (whether it's a balsa or foam build), send in your pics and I'll get them posted!! LINKS: Hobby City Harness (with safety caps)

In this 71st installment, we discuss Dorsal's progress and newest acquisitions, a cool site I found (cardboard? REALLY?), Larry's Blue Foam Wonder (as featured in Park Pilot magazine!), the RCadvisor talks a bit about scaling down airplanes, and I offer up a couple more great suppliers of balsa kits (for Corey from last week's show). As well, the cat is out of the bag! I've been kicking around the concept of online tutorials to help more people discover the magic that is balsa, but Fred (a very talented balsa builder) lit the fire beneath me so we're off. It's gonna be a great summer!! LINKS: Oh, and before I forget, here's your shopping list! Four - 3/16" x 3/16" x 36" balsa sticks One - 1/4" x 1/4" x 36" balsa stick Three - 1/16" x 4" x 36" balsa planks Five - 1/8" x 4 x 36" balsa planks One - piece of 6" x 6" x 1/8" Lite Ply If your budget allows, pick up a small sheet of 1/32" ply, too. It's great for strengthening! Buying the sizes I've shown above, you'll have some scrap left over. I actually used quite a few 3" wide planks, but rather than make the list too confusing, I've just shown 4" stock. It's better to have some left over for another project than to be short and have to postpone your building session! If you do NOT have a local hobby shop to get this stuff from, head on over to one of my favorite foam vendors that now sells balsa at very reasonable prices - RCFoam! |

In our 70th show, we dip into the ol' mailbag and share some listener emails. We talk a bit about engine tuning, some "real" kit suggestions, and some Desktop CNC options. Also, Carlos tells us about some things to consider when doubling the size of a model. Oh, and is there a hint in the air of something new and cool on the horizon? Hmmm.... LINKS: |

After a long time without one, we're back with the PhlatBoyZ for an update on the state of things in PhlatLand. In this 69th installment you'll learn what's in stock, what's beeing repurposed for in-house production, and what's on the horizon, so be sure to tune in! Woohoo! Since I managed to screw up the the podcast recording of our live session in Toledo, I was at least able to extract the audio from the video-feed that we put up on UStream (see the previous blog post for the link to that). Without a doubt, you would probably be better served by going over to Ustream and watching the video webcast - it will most likely make more sense seeing and hearing us, rather than just hearing us. Nonetheless, this installment now makes iTunes as an official show... Please excuse our "goofiness" - it was a LOOONG show and by the time we got to sit down and record this, we were all so mentally and physically "spent" that we were really out of it (no, no alcohol was involved in the taping of this segment! LOL). Regardless of the content and sound quality, we sure did have fun! With any luck at all, next week's show will contain much better information, so be sure to check us out! Links:

Boy, have we been BUSY!! As of right now, there is no MP3 available for this week's 64th installment that was recorded LIVE from the Park Inn (near the SeaGate Center) where the Toledo show is held annually. I did, however, remember this year to press the RECORD button for the video stream, so if click the following link you will be taken to my UStream page where you can see the show. I am hoping that when I get home I'll be able to extract the audio from this video and edit it in to a podcast episode "properly" so that you can still snag it in iTunes. Please excuse my goofiness, and no, no alcohol was involved in the making of this show (though it would have probably been better to lead you to believe there was! LOL).

Much Ado About Nothing - not as in Shakespeare's romantic comedy, but instead like, unfortunately, not a lot to report from the RC front. Dennis has been working on the "Observ-a-shed" and I've just completed and shipped two planes for the open-flying in Toledo. In this 62nd installment we yammer on about various things on the upcoming Toledo Weak Signals RC Show. Speaking of that, we are also looking at doing a video webcast LIVE from Toledo (not from the floor - more like from the hotel room after Saturday evening flying, like we did last year). If you guys are interested in seeing us all (me, Dennis, the PhlatBoyZ, and anyone else we can get) and hearing that week's show live, then go to AllThingsCrash to vote! Well, I braved the cold, the heavy winds, and the torrential downpour to make my way north to the Weatherford Aero Modeling Society's annual Swap Meet and Auction! I was able to resist blowing my life's savings on all the goodies I found there and only made a meager little $20 purchase. Something that this club has added to this event since my last visit are informative lectures given by key people in the RC Industry. In addition to renewing some old friendships at this huge event, I was also able to form another one with my acquaintence of Rick Cummins, owner of C&M Solutions Hobby AND one of the newest PhlatClub members (my first meeting with a fellow Texas PhlatPrinter enthusiast!)! I just found out that the event information that I announced in the last CrashCast installment has changed. The gathering will still be on Saturday, October 3rd, but the locale has changed.
For those of you that are planning to attend this cool event, please check out the following links that give directions to the North Texas Aeromodelers flying site (new event site) which is in Denton, TX, NOT Decatur, as previously mentioned. We're back again this week, but this time with better sound quality and some talk about some planes I'm certain you'll want to check out. Whether you're a seasoned pilot or just getting your feet wet in the RC hobby, consider building a SPAD as your next plane. SPADs (Simple Plastic Airplane Designs), built from seemingly unorthodox materials, offer the builder unique, rugged, and inexpensive designs that perform well. This will probably be the first of several segments on these types of aircraft! LOL Thanks go out to Spadman for inspiring this episode!
A quick correction: I mentioned in this show that the supplier of my FIRST SPAD aircraft (Airmadillo Kombat 40) was out of business. The truth is, it looks as though they are still alive and kicking! While surfing this evening I happened upon a very cool site - DLPlanes.com. I haven't figured it all out yet, but it appears that two young gents (from the UK, perhaps?) have started their own site to show folks "how it's done" in the RC world.
After cruising around their site for a bit, I discovered a link to their YouTube Channel and I must say that I'm quite impressed! These kiddoes really seem to know what they're doing!! Look out, Dave Powers! Daniel and Luis are coming for ya!! Be sure you subscribe to these guys' videos. I have a feeling we're gonna see some very cool stuff from them! We're back with the PhlatBoyZ this week for our monthly update, and what an update it is! Listen as we discuss the latest release of the PhlatScript, as well as changes made to the pricing structure affecting all new PhlatPrinter orders. Oh yeah, and this installment also contains some interesting information about a NEW machine that the PhlatBoyZ expect to be offering very soon! This information even caught ME off guard! LOL Also, the PhlayBoyZ now have an official online store for hawking their wares to the world!
I apologize for the sound quality on my channel in this show. For some reason, my PC decided out of the blue that it should default to my built-in mic rather than my Audio Technica studio mic. This perplexes me since the only thing I've used this PC for in the last 3 weeks is the podcast, and I have not monkeyed around with any of the audio settings for close to six months. Re-recording the show was not really an option, and I didn't want to deny you listeners this great, informative episode, so here it is cleaned up as best I can... |

PCV's??? LOL
In this show Dorsal and I gab about a few things, including my preparations for the vacation that I'll be heading out on in a few days. I will be reviewing the Axon Racing P51D airplane soon, since I ordered one from 2DogRC last evening and should be receiving it the week I return. Also, I'll be working up some sort of facsimile of Jackosmeister's Turbo Flea very soon to try out as a test-bed for the new 3,oookv Blue Wonder that HobbyCity has been selling. Remember, if you decide to follow suit and order yourself an Axon P51D kit, be sure to use coupon code "TheCrashCast" at 2DogRC to save 10% off your order! No real SOTW this week, but we did talk about some great deals over at HeadsUpRC. |

In this show, Dorsal and I discuss an assortment of things, so hold on and try to keep up! I got a chance to try out the water-slide paper I got from DecalPaper.com and I hafta say, the results were great! Unfortunately, the stuff didn't work on EPP because I ordered the inkjet paper instead of the temporary tattoo paper. Doh! Also, we talk a bit about the new E-Flite mSR FP Heli that is forthcoming.
This is the kinda show you get when we don't really nail down a specific topic and just "wing it"! LOL |

In this 28th installment, Dorsal and I get to hang out with none other than Mr. Carlos Reyes of RCAdvisor.com. Also, I give some dope on a nifty trick I found for putting graphics on your foamie using water-slide decals - the same material that is used for the temporary tattoos that the kids sport.

This show is all about the subject of "Club Planes" like the one I used to stir things up in my club back in 1996. A project like this offers the perfect opportunity for your club's seasoned veterans to teach the newbs the ins and outs of building rc planes, as well as opening the door for tons of fun! I'll post pics of my QSC 40 as soon as I can get a spare moment, or two. I'm hoping to work up plans for it and share them with the world sometime this summer.
Also, I'm giving a shout out to the DLG enthusiasts out there regarding a plane I'm interested in getting to see if I like this kind of flying. Feel free to email me if you have any comments about this bird, whether good or bad. We'll talk with you again next week! |

The title says it all - in this 17th installment, the PhlatBoyZ drop by to share what all they've been up to since the Toledo RC Expo and give us a little news about the soon-to-be-released PhlatPrinter MKII. Mark and Trish also tell us about a new CNC driver board that should be of interest to all CNC hobbyists, as well as folks that are into robotics! Can you imagine NOT having to be tied to a Parallel Port anymore, or even having to run a front-end CAM program like Mach3? That's what's in the works!
I am not only pleased with the content in this episode, but also the sound quality. This is my first time to run a true conference call in Skype and all of the homework I did payed off in sound quality and balance! I hope you enjoy the show! Let's flash back to the past for a moment, shall we? DATELINE: Toledo, OH, Saturday, Aril 4th The plan was to go fly a bit at the RCGroups Open Flying session after the Toledo RC Show closed down for the evening. We would then retire back to Mark and Trish's hotel room and set up for a live version of TheCrashCast. We would use Trish's new laptop and wireless card along with the webcam that was broadcasting from the skies over the PhlatBoyz Booth. Well, the 'cast was slightly delayed due to someone (ahem!) forgetting the power cables for said laptop. LOL Nonetheless, we pulled off a LIVE webcast. albeit a little behind schedule. This week's installment is a replay of the audio from that session where we discuss how the PhlatPrinter MKII was received during it's public debue. We also discuss some of the cool things we saw at the show, as well as neat people we met! I've got tons of information from this show that I intend to share with all of you, but we'll have to cover it in future episodes. I'm totally BEAT from the 19 hour drive back! LOL I did, however, want to get this audio up for those that missed it. We had great fun recording it, and I hope you enjoy the listen. --Crash |

After many years of wanting to attend, I'm finally bound for the Toledo Show sponsored by the Toledo Weak Signals club! I'll be leaving Wednesday, April 1st, so my countdown offically begins. I wanted to share a quick little video I shot this morning with you guys on the subject of Z Bends for your control surface linkages. I won't use Z Bend pliers, as the ones I tried years ago yield a very narrow area for your servo or control horn and they do not give you true 90 degree bends like you need for bind-free movement of the surface. I learned this technique from an old modeling friend and have found it to be priceless! Look for more vids down the line covering how I make pushrod assemblies, including a total Carbon Fiber Pushrod assembly...

Remember, I don't dig ARFS and I don't want to get into warbirds. Well, Spring has sprung! With that (in my neck of the woods) it means that the winds are probably gonna be fierce until about the end of June. What's an electric modeler like me supposed to do? Switch back to Nitro, that's what!
I pulled out a couple of Nitro-powered winners from my hangar and, after about a three year absence from this aspect of the sport, I found it was just like riding that ol' bike. Winds aren't so abusive to the heavier Nitro planes, so it looks like I'm no longer gonna be an electric-exclusive pilot, after all! I'd love to hear your comments on the audio in this episode - both the PhlatBoyz and me are trying out some new microphones. I think theirs sounds great, but I now need to investigate building a small "dampened environment" booth to achieve the best audio on my end!
